Caught in the Act

Caught in the Act is a way for TMI to recognize staff members for going above and beyond the parameters of their job description in some way. Many times this is an act of advocacy or dedication during a difficult time in a consumer’s life.

April 24, 2012 TMI recognized the following staff members:

Rosa (ES Lead Job Coach)

Rosa is a team player and always helps out in whatever way she is needed. Last month and this month, she has been a great advocate for one of our consumers who were in danger of losing her job. Rosa listened attentively, helped her when necessary and transported her to work when necessary. She showed great wisdom, support and firmness with this client.

Moises (ES Job Coach)

One of his clients hours were cut from 32 hrs to one day a week. This client has judgment and anger issues which were exacerbated by losing his hours. Moises provided support, kept him focused and positive. He also met him at the SS Admin office to help sort through issues with that, which is not part of his coaching duties but Moises recognized that Luis needed the support and so provided it.

Charlotte (ES Job Coach)

Charlotte has only been with us for 6 short months but she has mastered all aspects of her job remarkably well. One of her wonderful skills is the ability to think expansively to address the needs of our clients. She shows creativity and initiative in coming up with training ideas and tools. She does all of this on her own. She is never late with paperwork and it is all perfectly done with no mistakes. She had never worked as a coach before, but has a good friend with a disability so she has natural intuitive skills with handling her clients.

Liza (ES Job Coach)

Liza has proven herself to be a steady, reliable and calm individual in a very chaotic work environment with volatile personalities. She has consistently worked to improve her job coaching skills. She has been applauded by supervisors at JOI- SYPOE. Her efforts have paid off and so I would like to recognize her for it.

Erick (ES Job Coach)

Erick has done a great job with working with his clients at MC Vons. Since he has been coaching them, they have all made great progress. He is thought of very highly by Von’s management and they trust him to make changes to the daily assignments as necessary. Also, when Erick fills in for others job coaching, there is always a request for him to be a job coach at that location as well. Erick has offered friendship to one of his consumers, recognizing that this individual benefits from having a strong male mentor in his life. He is a wonderful ambassador for TMI.

Stan (ES Job Coach)

Stan continues to provide outstanding coaching skills. Eastlake Vons, where he coaches, absolutely love him. His clients respect and love him. He always gives 150%. He stays late to help Vons when they need it. Said Travis, store manager at Vons, “We would clone Stan if we could – I’d like 20 more just like him!”

Training Committee (Angela , Laura , Louanne , Paola Osuna, Rachel , Roger and Mary)

Members of the training committee have met regularly each month to discuss the training needs of TMI employees, and figure out how to best respond to those needs. Committee members have volunteered to plan, organize and present training, or to locate outside speakers, or to creatively approach training presentations so that they are both interesting and informative. They have worked hard, largely without any thanks or appreciation. For these reasons all of the long-term members of the committee have been awarded “Caught in the Act” gift cards.

Angela (CLS Coordinator)

Angela is always the first to volunteer when there is a need. She took on some work in North County that allowed us to take on some new referrals.

Sandra (IT Director)

Deana (IW Division Manager)

Cathena (SE Division Manager)

Cathena exhibited her usual going above and beyond the call of duty by driving two times to the consumer’s home in National City when she could not get the consumer’s conservator on the telephone to confirm the video shoot. In addition to her normal day-to-day TMI activities, Cathena readily and gladly offered her assistance making numerous phone call to Chuck E Cheese management in helping to pull off a staged “Birthday Party” at Chuck E Cheese. Our hats are off to Cathena Ferrerro.

Valarie (SE Division Manager)

Valarie Littlejohn not only gathered together a brood of seven children to bring to the TMI “Birthday Party” at Chuck E Cheese, she has also been tireless in helping to organize video shoots at Valhalla High School and Von’s both of which are in El Cajon.

Keltoum (CLS Coordinator)

Keltoum is supporting a man at the end of his life. Her commitment to the best quality services is outstanding. Her caring and sensitivity with his family has been an example of what any of us would want if it was our family member she was supporting.

Ana Marta (CLS Facilitator)

Ana has always been our go to staff when other staff are on vacation or need an unexpected break, but she never fails to amaze us with how seamlessly she can step in and get the job done! AnaMarta has really helped us out this month with staff being out.

Breeana (CLS Facilitator)

Breeana is always on top of what is going on with her caseload, but when one person in particular had a health issue come up she was so organized and detail oriented that everyone on the support team felt like they had been in the doctor’s office with them! She even made an instructional video for his new medical equipment. Not only did she make learning to use the new equipment fun, but any member of his support team can use that equipment with confidence after watching the video.

Alysia (IW Job Coach)

Alysia often gets praise from the parents of her group, the managers at Vons and even Vons' customers. I received a call from one particular customer a few weeks ago. The customer said that the group did great work and so did their job coach. Every single time she went shopping, she would always notice how caring and patient their job coach was and how well the group responded to her. Just seeing their interactions really brightened her day. This is just one example of the many compliments that Alysia has received since she's been with TMI and this is why I wanted to recognize Alysia Barber with Caught in the Act.

Joela (FSS Social Worker)

Joela went over and beyond when she assisted a biological family in getting a consumer to the hospital after doing a routine home visit and noticing they needed immediate medical care. Without her intervention the consumer could have died at the home.

Paola (FSS Social Worker)

Paola accompanied and escorted a foster child to Indiana by flight to see his family during the Holidays. The county social worker nor foster parent could not escort him during this time. The child would not have been able to see his biological family and would have been greatly disappointed if she didn’t volunteer to take him. It is obvious that Paola genuinely cares about those we serve.

Marisa (FSS Social Worker)

Marisa worked diligently to assist a foster child in receiving specialized physical therapy that could not be covered by medi-cal or SDRC. Through her advocating and passion for his care she was able to get the treating agency to consider doing the therapy for free. Happy to say that his sessions will be starting soon and will greatly impact his quality of life for the better.

July 26, 2011 TMI recognized the following staff members, from left to right: Tulare Mott, Desiree Davalos, Julian Herrera and Olivia Melancon

Tulare (FSS Social Worker)

Her excellent job performance as a SDSU intern has opened up the opportunity to become a full-time social worker with TMI Family Support Services.

Desiree (FSS Assistant)

Due to her dedicated service of administrative supports, she has made significant contributions to the success of TMI FSS recent audits and the overall running of the program in the past year.

Julian (IW Job Coach)

Job Coach, Julian Herrera questioned the staff at the local YMCA about the reasons why neither of the people in his group, who have been members of the YMCA for years, have never been chosen for “Member of the Month.” After the staff couldn’t come up with a valid answer, they decided to make Julian and Chuck members of the month for June.

Olivia (IW Job Coach)

Olivia Melancon was acknowledge for her outstanding job coaching skills: outstanding communication with her consumers and their employers, creative problem solving ability and strong advocacy skills. The end result is the great progress made by her clients on the job, having their job duties expanded as well as being recognized for their hard work and determination. Olivia is deeply caring and develops trusting, respectful and mutually beneficial relationships with all her consumers.

January 25, 2011 TMI recognized the following staff members, from left to right: Barbara Melendez, Brenna Garhartt and Bertha Taylor

Brenna (CLS Facilitator)

Brenna works in our Independent Living program with several individuals that live in their own homes. In one month, every individual that Brenna works with had some sort of major live event happen (All at the same time!) She assisted two individuals move, helped straighten out an important financial matter, and even helped out a Coordinator with another consumer. Everyone that Brenna works with gets 100%, regardless of what is going on with everyone else that she supports. Thank you Brenna!

Barbara

Barbara has worked with the same individual in Supported Living for many years and probably doesn’t hear as often as she should what a wonderful job she does. The individual that she works with had a medical procedure done that required some extra support before, during, and after. Barbara ensured that not only the individual that she supports had all her questions answered, but also ensured that she was knowledgeable about the procedure. Barbara even took time off from her day job to support this individual during her recovery!

Bertha (SE Job Coach)Bertha has been a valued TMI employee since 1996. She works as a job coach in the Supported Employment department where recently received our “Caught in the Act” award. Bertha’s outstanding advocacy ensured the continued employment of one of her client.. Bertha is not one to sit idly by when she sees an injustice being done! In addition to advocating for her clients, Bertha is recognized for being reliable, a team-player, possessing a great sense of humor and amazing energy. Bertha always has her client’s best interest at heart. TMI is very fortunate to have such a dedicated and gracious employee such as Ms. Bertha Taylor!
