Toward Maximum Independence (TMI) is kicking off Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month with our top 10 reasons why it makes good business sense to hire employees with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

  1. Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) training stipend given to employers to off-set the cost of training our clients

  2. Clients are supported in the workplace by a professional TMI Job Coach to ensure success

  3. Regional Center clients are eligible for the PAID INTERNSHIP PROGRAM, which fully covers employee wages for an extended period of time

  4. Financial support is available for any specialty items required by our clients for employment such as tools or uniforms

  5. Clients are provided with transportation costs to help ensure that they are able to attend work

  6. Clients are eager and motivated to work

  7. Improved overall employee morale

  8. Non-binding agreement that can be terminated at any time

  9. Employer tax incentives may be available

Our clients can absolutely enjoy the rewards of being a contributing member in society and have the satisfaction and pride that comes with having a job or volunteering. With assistance from TMI support staff with our Integrated Work, Supported Employment, Tailored Day Services and Evolution to Independence (deaf and hard of hearing) programs, we work with our clients to secure and maintain gainful employment in the community, if desired, and also work in collaboration with local businesses to develop volunteer opportunities for our clients.

Although paid work is the desired outcome for our clients, many are working as volunteers at a wide variety of nonprofit organizations throughout San Diego, Riverside and Imperial Counties.

TMI further assists local school districts to secure jobs for students in their last year of public education to help promote and ensure a smooth transition from school to adult life where jobs are the first order of business.
