From an Unforgettable First Impression to Employee of the Month: Joel’s Inspiring Journey at Camp Pendleton

When Joel, who is on the autism spectrum, arrived for his first day with Camp Pendleton Basewide, he didn't know the crew yet. He was stepping into a new worksite, a new schedule, and a new team after previously working the graveyard shift at the commissary. For many people, that would be a lot to take in at once.

Joel took it all in—then went on to surprise everyone.

His story was shared by Toward Maximum Independence (TMI) Direct Support Professional Andy Palasciano, who supports Joel through the TMI Supported Employment program via our partnership with Job Options. Camp Pendleton Basewide recently named Joel Employee of the Month—an honor that reflects his strong work ethic, positive attitude, and the deep connections he builds with those around him.

Andy describes Joel as having “something you can’t teach.” He works hard, genuinely cares about his peers, and knows his job inside and out. And, as his team learned on day one, he has a remarkable ability to connect.

A First Day No One at Basewide Will Forget

Basewide Project Manager Will Bellinger has a running joke for new hires. On a new team member’s first day, the crew gathers in a circle, and around 30 employees introduce themselves one by one. After everyone has spoken, Will turns to the newcomer and says, “Before we get started, I want you to repeat all the names you just heard.”

Most of the time, the new person laughs, the crew chuckles, and Will moves everyone along with a friendly, “Let’s get to work!” It’s a simple icebreaker—giving the team a shared laugh and helping a new employee feel included without putting real pressure on the moment.

Then came Joel.

When Will delivered his usual punchline, Joel didn't just laugh—he proceeded to name all 30 people in the circle.

The group erupted in cheers.

That single moment spoke volumes. It showed incredible focus, memory, and confidence. Instead of a routine first-day chuckle, the crew got a first-day celebration, and Joel became an instant part of the team.

Starting a new job often comes with high pressure—names to memorize, routines to master, and expectations to fulfill. Joel stepped into that environment and revealed something powerful about himself before the workday had even officially begun: he was paying attention, he was ready, and he belonged.

Bringing Skill and Heart to the Work

Joel’s Employee of the Month recognition wasn't based on that stand-out first impression alone; it stems from what his team witnesses day after day.

Andy notes that Joel is a diligent worker who maintains a great pace—a vital quality at Basewide, where crews move constantly from building to building. The role demands stamina, focus, and the adaptability to follow strict routines while adjusting to each location's specific needs.

Will noticed early on how quickly Joel caught on. When a crew member learns the ropes, grasps the rhythm, and works with care, the entire team benefits.

Joel has also become famous for his detailed knowledge of the various van routes used by the crews. Aside from management and team leads, he knows those routes better than almost anyone on-site. It’s far more than a minor detail—it demonstrates that Joel understands the broader flow of the workplace, not just the task directly in front of him. He notices patterns, anticipates where people need to be, and understands how the whole day fits together.

A Teammate People Love Being Around

Workplaces are defined by the people who show up every day, and Joel brings a wonderful energy to his team. Quick with a smile or a joke, he makes long shifts feel lighter. He is also deeply thoughtful—greeting others warmly, offering a hand whenever needed, and building quiet trust over time.

His coworkers were excited to see him named Employee of the Month because they see his steady effort, kindness, and uplifting spirit firsthand.

A New Shift, A New Chapter

Transitioning from the night shift at the commissary to daytime work at Basewide was a major adjustment, but Joel handled it seamlessly. While he still misses his old night crew—a testament to the strong bonds he creates wherever he goes—he loves seeing more of the base as his team moves between facilities. The daytime shift offers new routes to master, new people to connect with, and a broader view of the operation he proudly supports.

Support Opens Doors, But Joel Did the Work

Joel’s success story highlights what happens when individuals are given the right opportunities to shine. While our Supported Employment program helps remove barriers and provides ongoing guidance, Joel earned Employee of the Month through his own drive, talent, and determination.

He didn't receive an award because of a label—he earned it because he shows up, learns fast, pays attention to the details, and elevates everyone around him.

His teammates at Basewide aren't just celebrating his work performance; they are celebrating the person behind it. They still talk about his incredible first day, but now they see that same focus, memory, and heart in everything he does.

Congratulations, Joel!
