October is a time for recognition and celebration, as we observe both Down Syndrome Awareness Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). At Toward Maximum Independence (TMI), we couldn't think of a better person to spotlight than our client, Karljon, whose incredible spirit and dedicated volunteer work embody the true meaning of community inclusion and ability.

A True Community Contributor
Karljon, a client in TMI's Community Integration Training Program, is a familiar and beloved face across the Temecula area. He is currently a committed volunteer at Inland Valley Hospital and other TMI community partner sites, where he consistently demonstrates the dedication, organization, and social grace that make him an invaluable asset to every team he joins.
Whether he is assisting staff, greeting visitors, or helping with necessary tasks, Karljon is actively transforming perceptions and making a tangible impact on the quality of life for others.
His success is a powerful testament to TMI’s mission: to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live, work, and take their rightful place in society. Through his volunteer roles, Karljon not only gains valuable experience but also builds deep connections, proving that people with disabilities are essential, contributing members of the workforce.
His outstanding TMI Direct Support Professional (DSP) for four years, Robin Harrington, sees his impact firsthand and recognizes the unique joy he brings to the community:

"Karljon is one of my hardest workers. He's so organized and has such detail with every task he completes. Karljon has a fan base at all job sites. If I'm having a rough day, Karljon turns it around with his smile and kindness. He is amazing soul and it's an honor to be in his presence." — Robin
Karljon's infectious sense of humor and kind nature mean that wherever he goes, people are drawn to him. He has made remarkable progress since joining the program, fueled by his polite manner and perhaps a bit of inspiration from his favorite Marvel superhero, Captain America!

The Power of Awareness: Inspiring Facts
As we celebrate Karljon’s commitment and progress, let's reflect on the positive facts that make Down Syndrome Awareness Month and NDEAM so important:
Ability-Focused: Down Syndrome Awareness Month is dedicated to promoting advocacy, fostering inclusion, and focusing on the abilities of individuals, rather than limitations.
Rising Life Expectancy: Thanks to advancements in medical care and early intervention, the average life expectancy for individuals with Down syndrome has dramatically increased, from just 25 years in 1980 to over 60 years today.
Valued Workers: People with Down syndrome are known to be dedicated, dependable, and often bring a positive energy that enhances the workplace for everyone. Studies show they frequently have lower rates of job turnover.
Inclusion is the Goal: National Disability Employment Awareness Month highlights the positive impact of a diverse and inclusive American workforce, showcasing that all individuals, including those with disabilities, deserve the opportunity for meaningful employment.

Karljon, with his kindness, organization, and incredible progress, is a shining example of what happens when individuals are supported to reach their Maximum Independence. Their success is our success!
His consistent presence and hard work demonstrate the many benefits of inclusive employment and volunteering—not just for the individual, but for the organizations and people they serve.

Clients generally start the process by volunteering throughout the community at various sites. They continue at their own speed, in line with their desires and abilities, while working toward their own personal goals.
