Beyond the Spectrum: Aaliyah’s Inspiring Path to Veterinary Success

At Toward Maximum Independence (TMI), we believe that a diagnosis like autism is just one part of a person’s story—not a boundary to their potential. Today, we are celebrating Aaliyah, a remarkable young woman who has proven that with the right support and an unbreakable spirit, career dreams become a reality. On December 18, 2025, Aaliyah officially graduated from the Health Occupations Center (HOC) Veterinary Assistant program, marking a pivotal milestone in her professional life.

A Balancing Act: The Zoo, School, and Success

Aaliyah’s journey is a testament to her incredible work ethic. Since 2022, she has utilized TMI’s Tailored Day Services (TDS) to navigate her path toward employment and education. Her dedication is perhaps most evident in her schedule: while attending classes, she also secured part-time employment at the San Diego Zoo. Working there since December 2024, Aaliyah has gained invaluable experience in one of the world's most renowned animal care environments while simultaneously managing her studies.

Resilience in the Classroom

Success didn't come without hurdles. Aaliyah had previously enrolled in the Veterinary Assistant program but was unable to finish. Returning to the program required immense courage and persistence.

Her TMI Direct Support Professional (DSP), Maria Alvarado, noted that while Aaliyah was initially quiet and "in her shell," her confidence blossomed. She achieved perfect attendance and became a leader in the classroom, often being the first to volunteer for animal "holds" or demonstrations.

"It has been a great pleasure and achievement to provide assistance for Aaliyah," Maria shared. "I’m really happy I was able to provide support helping Aaliyah achieve her goal."

A Village of Support

To ensure Aaliyah could master the curriculum, Maria provided hands-on coaching, staying after class to practice taking vitals, survival packing, and grooming techniques. TMI also collaborated with the Department of Rehabilitation to provide a laptop, printer, and funding for her textbooks.

Beyond the classroom and the workplace, TMI's Independent Living Services (ILS) program is currently assisting Aaliyah with finding an apartment, ensuring she has a stable, independent foundation as she enters this new chapter of her life.

Aaliyah's mom, Monique, has seen the transformation firsthand:

"First and foremost, I'm thankful to TMI for working with her to help overcome her obstacles and move toward independence. She has found a purpose in her life and enjoys going to work. She loves caring for the animals. I see improvement in Aaliyah's confidence, and she has acquired a much more positive outlook. I would say to anyone else out there who seeks a better life of independence and sees no hope: 'Where there is a will, there is a way, and TMI could possibly be the way!'"

Looking Toward a Bright Future

Aaliyah’s ultimate dream is rooted in her compassion for animals, particularly cats. TMI Supported Employment Division Manager Jerla Wood highlights how Aaliyah’s diverse experiences are paving the way:

Aaliyah volunteering at the Humane Society

"In 2023, Aaliyah volunteered and completed a paid internship with TMI's assistance at the San Diego Humane Society, which is her dream workplace, and she hopes to return there for permanent employment," said Jerla. "Her long-term goal is to become a professional veterinarian. With TMI’s support, she remains on track toward this goal. Graduating from HOC Veterinary School is an important step in her career path."

Currently, Aaliyah is completing a 120-hour externship, with her sights set on becoming a Veterinary Technician and eventually a full Veterinarian. The program aims to prepare students for the workforce, covering topics such as medical math and office procedures. For more information, prospective students can visit the HOC website.

Congratulations, Aaliyah! We are so proud to be part of your journey from student to animal care professional.
