Autism and Achievement: Andrew's Inspiring Journey Lands Him with Straight A's

We at Toward Maximum Independence (TMI) are excited and proud to celebrate a significant milestone achieved by one of our dedicated Tailored Day Services clients, Andrew! Andrew, who is on the autism spectrum, has successfully completed his college certificate as a Business Information Worker from San Diego City College.

Andrew's journey highlights the power of dedication and the impact of personalized support. His Direct Support Professional (DSP), Lorinda Elder, provided invaluable assistance throughout his educational pursuit. Each semester, Lorinda reminded Andrew to set up meetings with Jessica, his college Disability Support Services Counselor. During these meetings, they would review the necessary courses that Andrew needed to complete. Afterwards, Lorinda assisted Andrew with course registration. When living at home, Andrew was able to pay the required college fees on his own.

Consistent Engagement and Overcoming Challenges

Andrew consistently engaged with his coursework, diligently working on assignments every Tuesday and Thursday during his meetings with Lorinda. They established a productive routine, utilizing the quiet study rooms at the College Rolando Library for focused learning. The library Security Guard, Mrs. Pat, and the Librarian, Maria, played significant roles in Andrew's journey. Mrs. Pat consistently initiated conversations with Andrew, who typically passed by without making eye contact. Similarly, Maria not only conversed with him but also reserved the study room to ensure he could work undisturbed.

Like any student, Andrew faced challenges. He found essay writing particularly demanding. Additionally, occasional unavailability of the library study room meant adapting to less preferred study environments like the courtyard. Despite these hurdles, Andrew's structured nature and commitment to meeting deadlines ensured he persevered.

Dedicated Support Makes a Difference

Lorinda played a crucial role in Andrew's success. She facilitated his study sessions, ensuring he had a dedicated time and space to focus. When the preferred study environment wasn't available, she helped him navigate the change.

A Transformation Beyond Academics

Initially, Andrew viewed his classes as simply "filling time." However, as he progressed, a remarkable transformation occurred. Lorinda observed him becoming increasingly engaged in his coursework, actively participating in class discussions and striving for the highest possible grades. In fact, he achieved straight A's in his final semester! This academic growth was accompanied by a boost in his confidence.

A Proud Graduation Day

Initially hesitant about the commencement ceremony, Andrew was encouraged by his parents and Lorinda. On graduation day, Andrew made the empowering choice to walk with the entire graduating class, stepping outside his comfort zone despite the long, hot, and crowded environment. With newfound confidence, he proudly walked across the stage to receive his Business Information Worker Certificate.

Lorinda shared the immense pride she felt in witnessing Andrew's journey: "I was so proud of him navigating out of his comfort zone and completing his goal!"

Andrew expressed his gratitude for the assistance provided by Lorinda and his Counselor, Jessica. He intends to secure a job that enables him to work remotely, similar to his mother's work arrangement.

Andrew's achievement is a testament to his hard work, the unwavering support of Lorinda and the principles of TMI's services. We extend our warmest congratulations to Andrew on this wonderful accomplishment! We know that he has a bright future ahead!
