We often hear stories of overcoming adversity, but sometimes, the most powerful stories are the ones that unfold in our own communities. In honor of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we want to share the inspiring journey of Joe, a man from Brawley, California, whose determination and spirit have been a driving force in his path to success!

Marisela Salazar, a dedicated Direct Support Professional with El Centro Toward Maximum Independence (TMI), a nonprofit serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, recently shared Joe's story with us. It's one that deserves to be celebrated. For the past six years, Marisela has worked with Joe, witnessing his growth and resilience firsthand as she has helped him develop the necessary skills to enter the workforce.

Joe is a familiar face in Brawley, known affectionately throughout the community. But nine months ago, feeling prepared, he took a significant step, overcoming his fears and starting work at KFC. This wasn't just any job; it was a chance for Joe to prove to himself and others what he is capable of.

He embraced his role with enthusiasm, learning to keep the restaurant clean, master the art of biscuit-making, and most importantly, connecting with his colleagues and customers. Marisela describes Joe's "special senses" – his ability to make everyone feel welcome, not just at KFC, but also at One Stop, where he also works.

With Marisela by Joe's side every step of the way, he was able to find the confidence to put his skills to use. Joe's story is a testament to the power of advocacy, progress, and determination. He proudly carries his TMI ID, a symbol of his journey, and shares his story with a smile, declaring, "Now is TMI!"

Marisela expresses immense gratitude to the entire TMI family and a special thank you to the staff at KFC Brawley for their partnership. She hopes that Joe's story will inspire others, demonstrating that transformation is possible with the right support and a belief in one's potential.

Joe's journey is a powerful reminder of the impact that organizations like TMI have on individuals and communities. By providing job coaching and support, TMI empowers individuals with disabilities to achieve their goals and live fulfilling lives.

We are incredibly proud to share Joe's story and celebrate his achievements. He is a shining example of the possibilities that lie within each of us.

Congratulations, Joe! We know that you have a bright future ahead!

(Thank you to Marisela for contributing to this story.)

Joe is with the TMI Community Integration Training Program (CITP) which is designed as a vocational and social skills training program to recognize, develop and build the necessary skills for our clients to participate in their community, all at the level at which the client chooses. Clients generally start the process by volunteering throughout the community at various sites. They continue at their own speed, in line with their desires and abilities, while working toward their own personal goals.
