The Toward Maximum Independence (TMI) Independent Living program continues to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Two of our clients, Thomas and Lynn, have experienced significant transformations thanks to the dedicated support and resources provided by TMI and our outstanding Case Manager Keltoum Cherki.
Thomas's Journey: Overcoming Challenges and Finding a Home
Thomas, a long-time TMI client, faced a setback when he moved to Arizona to be closer to family. His relocation also led to a loss of essential benefits, including Section 8 housing assistance. Upon returning to San Diego, he found himself without a place to live. Thomas faced the daunting task of finding affordable housing in a competitive market.
With Keltoum's assistance, Thomas was able to secure a private room in a shared house. However, the financial burden of a deposit proved to be a challenge. TMI stepped in to provide a crucial boost. Thomas received $1,000 from the TMI Julie Casey Honorary Fund to put toward his deposit.

Moving into a shared living space presented new challenges for Thomas, as he faced a loss of independence and privacy. Keltoum played a vital role in helping Thomas navigate these obstacles.
In addition, by assisting with the reinstatement of health insurance and food stamps, Keltoum ensured that Thomas has access to essential resources.
The positive impact of TMI's support is evident in Thomas's newfound excitement and happiness. His new living arrangement has provided him with a greater sense of stability and independence. Thomas was able to overcome financial hurdles and live in a home where he is happy and enjoying his independence!

Lynn's Story: A Path to Independence
Lynn has been a valued TMI client for more than 15 years, during which time she has received invaluable assistance in various areas of her life. TMI has been instrumental in helping Lynn manage her medical and dental appointments, resolve complex issues, and improve her household management skills.
Lynn grew up in a loving family. Sadly, her mom passed away four years ago which was very painful for Lynn. She has faced additional challenges, including a temporary loss of her Section 8 housing voucher. Lynn felt alone, scared, and anxious about losing her housing. Keltoum, through her persistence and advocacy, successfully reinstated Lynn's voucher, preventing her from going to a group home or becoming homeless. Living on a limited income has presented other challenges for Lynn. However, she has demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination.
Lynn continues to find joy in her life. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family, cherishing the connections that bring her happiness. Lynn's future is filled with hope as she continues to work toward her goals of independence. With TMI's ongoing support, Lynn is confident in her ability to maintain her housing and continue to thrive.
Shared Challenges and Shared Solutions
Both Thomas and Lynn have faced similar challenges in their journeys toward independence. These challenges have included finding affordable housing and navigating complex bureaucratic systems. TMI has been instrumental in providing the support and resources needed to overcome these obstacles.
A Community of Support
TMI's commitment to empowering individuals extends beyond housing and benefit assistance. The program fosters a sense of community and belonging by offering several annual clients events and online CONNECT activities, enabling clients like Thomas and Lynn to connect with others and build lasting relationships. TMI provides a safe and supportive environment for clients to share their experiences and develop the skills needed to succeed.
